Discussion

LOVE – AHAVA

Look Up & Discuss

1 John 4:7-8 & 16 – Love originates from God, He IS love!

1 John 4:19 – We love because He first loved us.

John 3:16 – Love motivated God to send Jesus to save us

1 John 4:9-10 – God’s love is best seen in Jesus’ sacrifice

Romans 5:8 – God’s love shown while we’re still sinners

1 John 3:1 – He loves us so much He made us part of His family!

God loves us first, and gives us ability to love Him in response, (in gratitude) and to love others

Everything God does stems from His love.

What does God require?

Deut 10:12-13 – Fear and love God, serve Him faithfully, keep His commands because they’re for our own good!

Micah 6:8 – do what is right, love mercy, walk humbly with Him

Discuss commandments vs. teachings, Old Cov. Vs. New Cov. Nomos vs. Entole

Matthew 22:37-40 – All 613 OT commands summed up in 2, love God & love others

In every situation ask: “What does love require of me?” or “What’s the loving thing to do?”

Easier than do this and don’t do that and how much of this can I get away with before breaking this command.

Love is not just a sentiment or feeling, it’s an action, both something God does and we do for Him. Love is active.

Matthew 5:43-48 – Love your enemies too

1 John 5:3 – Loving God requires keeping His commandments (teachings), also John 14:15

James 2:14-20 – faith shown by actions

John 3:16-21 – Those without Jesus have plenty to fear, ultimately eternity separated from God in Hell.

1 John 4:18 – God’s perfect love casts out fear

Romans 8:38-39 – Nothing can separate us from God’s love!

Galatians 5:22-23 – Fruit of Spirit God produces in our lives

1 Cor. 13:1-7; 13 – “Love chapter”

Home-work:

  • Besides your personal daily devotions and prayer
  • Encourage to pray regularly as a family
  • Encourage to have family devos at least once a week (song, scripture, prayer).
