As children of God, we understand that God wants us to pray. He wants us to talk to him and speak the desires of our heart.
“You do not have because you do not ask.” James 4:2
Have you ever had a friend or relative ask you what you want for your birthday? Why do you think they ask you this? It’s because they want to make you happy by giving you something you want.
God is the same way. He already knows what you want, but He wants you to ask Him for it. It makes Him happy when you come to Him knowing He can give you anything.
There are times when God knows that what we want would be bad for us. And although we ask Him for it, He will not give it to us.
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.” James 4:2-3
Think of it this way… It’s like wanting a snack before dinner. You ask but your mom or dad says you can’t have it because “it will ruin your dinner.” Your parents aren’t trying to keep you from what you want, they are helping you get what you need – what’s good for you. If you eat the snack, you may be too full to eat your vegetables at dinner. And we all know you need your vegetables to grow up big and strong!
This is the same with God when he doesn’t give you what you want. He knows everything – the past, present and future – and He knows what’s best for us. Have you ever heard someone say, “If it’s God’s Will”? That means, they will ask for it but with the idea that they only want it if God wants it for them. Be like that. Ask for things, but trust God to give you it only if it’s the best thing for you!
“Submit therefore to God…Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:7-8
To remind yourself to pray and not just think about things, create a reminder to hang on your door. Use this saying… “Did you think to pray?” Whenever you see it, then you’ll be reminded that God wants you to pray to Him!
