Calvary Kids Activity

CalvaryKids (of all ages), show us your HORSE!

Have you ever ridden a horse or seen someone riding a horse? Do you recall a strap the rider uses to guide the hose in the direction he or she wants to go? Do you know what this strap is called or how it is works?

This is the reins. The reins are attached to the bridle, which is often connected to a piece in the horse’s mouth called a bit. The bit and bridle work together to apply pressure in and around the sensitive areas of a horse’s mouth. This allows the rider to guide the horse in the direction he or she would like to go, by controlling the animal’s tongue.

When you look at the size of the horse, it’s crazy to think that a person can control something so large with something so small! Isn’t it? In the Bible, God uses this picture of obedience of the tongue to illustrate the power of our own tongue.

“When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal… Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.” James 3:3,5

Though the tongue is a small part of our bodies, it exercises influence and control way out of proportion to its size. If the power and influence of our tongues are not under the control of the Holy Spirit, the tongue can cause awful devastation in our own lives and in the lives of those around us. One hasty sentence, one thoughtless remark, one quick put-down, can start a conflagration that destroys years of work, –years of building, –and it can burn on and on and on! And once a destructive word is spoken, consequence follows consequence and the whole course of our lives is in motion headed in the direction our tongue has guided it.

To remind ourselves to control our tongues in a way that will allow Jesus to guide us, use this opportunity to create your own horse. You can use toilet paper rolls, paper, paint, a pool noodle – whatever you have around the house – but remember to add the bridle! Once your finished, please share your creation with us by posting on social media with #calvaryphxwatchparty and SHOW US YOUR HORSE!
